Many people wait until the New Year to set their new health or fitness goals as a part of their New Year’s resolutions. And on this list of goals, a good portion of people have ‘losing weight’ as the main one.
Weight loss can be a long process but perseverance is important. Seek help if you need it, and try not to ignore the other health goals that you can make. Because guess what? Health is more than seeing a number on the scale.
So let’s scrap all of the vague weight loss goals and set some health and fitness goals that you can achieve easily in the next few months.
The Best Way To Achieve Your Health Goals
The secret to success is simplicity.
When you have a lot of things competing for your attention, one or more of them is doomed to fail. So, to set ourselves up for success, let’s focus on one or two health goals that we can easily achieve.
Your health goals should also be:
1- Specific– Are you going to lose run every week or are run 1o miles each week?
2- Measurable– How will you track your distance?
3- Actionable- What 2 or 3 actions can you take to achieve your goal?
Granted, there are some health goals that we will feel the effects of before we see any physical results. One such goal is quitting sugar. Unless it affects your skin, sinuses, etc, then you likely won’t see the results but you’ll feel it.
5 Simple Health and Fitness Goals To Achieve This Year
Go On a 5k Walk or Run
If you’re into deadlines and competitions, this is a great way to get into the fitness mindset. There are numerous 5K walks or runs that happen throughout the year, so you can choose one and start preparing.
You’ll have a specific fitness goal that you can work towards and once you cross that finish line, you can cross it off your to-do list.
A huge bonus is that most 5Ks are usually for a charitable cause, so you’ll achieve a health goal AND donate to a worthy cause.
That’s a double win in my book.
Stop Eating Sugar
Instead of vowing to eat healthy, it’s easier to focus on what the most unhealthy foods in your diet are and then eliminate them completely.
This is a very simple and specific health goal that will help you to reap other benefits.
When I stopped eating added sugar, I experienced less bloat so my tummy got flatter. Also, my skin cleared up, and I had less sugar cravings. You can read the post about how I did it here.
Want to know what you can use to replace sugar in your diet? Here are some low carb sugar substitutes and some regular sugar replacements that you can start using literally today.
Work Out Consistently
Don’t wait until your friend’s wedding or a surprise date to shape up. Working out consistently is a fitness goal all by itself.
Consistently choosing to prioritize those 15-40 minutes (however long you choose to exercise) can make a difference in the long-term. Sure, it’s fun to get the extra push for a special occasion, but try it just for yourself for a couple of months, and I know that you’ll fall in love with it.
Besides, finding a gym, a work-out buddy, a personal trainer, or a diet plan does take time. Do it now so you don’t have to spend your new year on those basics.
Become Physically Stronger
I get that you don’t want to look like The Rock, but if health is a priority, then strength should be a natural fitness goal. In fact, wanting to become stronger doesn’t mean showing a lot of visible muscle, especially for women.
Like all the other health goals that were mentioned above, strength can be measured and is very much actionable. You can measure it by the amount of push-ups you can do and the amount of weights you can lift.
It’s also helpful in real life. Carrying your luggage or your kids without your arms turning into jelly is a life goal that everyone should strive for.
Achieve Your Fitness Goals Before The Next Year
Why wait until the new year to decide that you want to lose weight or start doing yoga to become more flexible and zen?
The best strategy is to start from now and enjoy the renewed energy that most of us feel at the beginning of the new year. Use that time to focus on other big things that you feel super excited about.
And the best part is that your healthy habits will already be ingrained so your life can flow easier. Which health or fitness goal do you want to achieve first?
